Hamilton fell fast for Eliza, writing furvant letters to Angelica about his new love and also suggesting that the revolutionary army’s chances of success would be greatly diminished if Eliza didn’t wed him…which is kinda weird and intense, but I guess it worked because in December 1780 the pair were married! Ron Chernow calls her a "founding mother," like Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and Dolley Madison.Īfter Alexander died, she worked very hard to gather all information about her husband. She really tried throughout her lifetime to make sure the limelight was on her husband. She later made sure her children could read solely because she felt it was important to understand the bible. She was a woman of great religious interest. Ralph Earl painted her in 1787, and the most noticed feature are her striking eyes, probably the feature that attracted Alexander.Įliza met Martha Washington and later called her, ". As many would put it know, she was a cinnamon roll. She was short, pretty, had a determined spring in her step, noted to be cheerful, kind, generous, and compassionate. However, she was very up-to-date on all things political, because of her older sister and her father. She was very close to all of her siblings, but mostly to Angelica.Įliza received little teaching.
